Boris, I'm sorry. Last year you said to me in one of our infrequent exchanges: "Do something! Stop him!" You, my friend from Munich, have been living your life out in the shadow of the atrocities of the second world war, and the echoes now are deafening. You know this territory, and the legacy of it. And yet, I and others who see what you see weren't able to stop it. In fact, somehow, what seemed like a flickering flare has become a roaring fire with its own engine.

And many in the Americas and beyond are now feeling beyond hope. In these first days after the election, the emotions of loss and fear are strong. The first comfort we reach for is to try to make sense of what happened. To find a thread of knowing, sureness. I find myself casting about for that knowing handle. The pundits are picking apart the campaign strategy. Teachers are reminding us of the theory of evolutionary transformation, and framing this apparent regression in the context of a needed pruning.

And yet, the enduring ground, the place from which good action is born, is actually staying firmly in the "not knowing". We can take in what we see... hear the analyses and explanations... and, at the same time, keep righting ourselves into the posture of open-hearted and open-minded humility. From here, another voice can come through. From here, we can truly partner with the Life Force that beckons, reassures and fuels what is asked of us.

“ we still do not know one thousandth of one percent of what nature has revealed to us”.

Albert Einstein
